John,
If it is a tank leak and not a fitting, you are in for a pretty big but do-able job. The tank rests on a plywood floor that is glassed to the main stringer running fore and aft (same as the starboard tank). No way to get under it. In my '79 they are 70 gals each, and have to be removed through the deck. I recommend thoroughly checking exactly where the fuel is leaking from, and you may luck out if it is the fuel sending unit gasket (located on the outside top of the tank forward of the filler neck), the filler hose itself, the pick-up fitting, or the vent fitting. If it is one of those, you can cut out the portion of the deck to gain access to that part only, and make a suitable cover to close the repair. To remove the fuel you can fish a hose into the filler and siphon out with a sparkless or manual pump. Or, disconnect the hose at the water separators in the bilge (engine area) and use that as your siphon hose. Hopefully you won't have to do it. If it is the tank, and you must remove it, I can help you to avoid a lot of headaches and heartache. Feel free to email me directly and I'll give you the blow by blow. It is a process that is now indellibly etched in my memory!!
Good luck

: Hi everyone. I just purchased a 75/76 28 Mega with a fuel leak that I believe is coming from the port side fuel tank. First problem is that i cant get into the bilge under the tank to remove the fuel. Any thoughts? Also how do I remove the tank to inspect for leaks? Do I have to tear up the floor? Thank You
